Getting the Sanding Done Right

We find that our customers feel a lot more comfortable through the process of bringing their wooden floors to life, if they have a clear understanding of the work that we do.  Allow us to give you an overview now, so you know what is involved and what to expect.

Phase One

Once the furniture is out of the way we can get to the floors. Timber floors are often hidden by some type of floor covering such as linoleum or carpet which of course needs to be removed. We are happy to provide you with a quote to take off the floor covering including anything holding it in place, be that stables, nails or glue. If there are nails in place that attach boards to joists in your home then we will punch these down as required – often miraculously getting rid of some pesky creaks that you have been putting up with, and preventing unwanted movement between the floorboards.

Phase Two

When we have removed floor coverings it is sometimes the case that there is some pre-existing damage to individual boards that was not previously known about. We are skilled in dealing with this. If the board is not recoverable to our high standard, what we will do is quote you to replace it entirely. Now obviously if it is an older floor then chucking down some shiny new piece of timber fresh off the mill is going to stand out like a sore thumb. We instead have great sources of salvaged timber that allow us to find a board that matches the existing floor in age and appearance so that it can be replaced without looking any different from the rest of the floor.

Phase Three

By this stage we are ready to begin with the actual sanding of your floors. Often timber floors that have been covered up or used for years will have quite a rough surface. To get the lateral flatness that we require for your final picture-perfect floors, we will start off by using a rough grade of sand paper and sanding the floor at a very specific 45 degree angle.

Once the initial rough sand is completed, we will sand the floor over and over again, progressively selecting finer sandpaper with each go-over with our belt sander. Once it has finally reached our high set standard for this stage, we will then use our rotary sander for the final sanding.

A good quality rotary sander is specially designed to finish off a floor by getting rid of any fine marks that are produced during the belt sanding phase. This is one of the final steps in the sanding process and your flawlessly smooth and soft to touch floors will start to emerge.

Our wood floor polishing in West End staff are very experienced and pedantic so the next stage will complete the process to a very high standard.

Using the Very Best Products

There are basically two categories of Polyurethane that you can use on your floor, it all depends on what look you are going for. And don’t be overwhelmed, this is our area of knowledge so we will be on hand with great advice and insights to help you come to the right decision.

A very popular choice that has certainly stood the test of time is Solvent based Polyurethane. The clients that favour this are typically looking for that high gloss finish. For a high gloss effect with great depth of finish you can’t go past a Solvent Based Polyurethane. It has to be said too, that when administered with the right skill and expertise, Solvent based products can also produce a lower gloss, warm and mellow effect through their Semi-gloss or Matte range of products.

For our clients who request a more subtle, low sheen look, we will usually go with the second category of Polyurethane, that being the Water-based range. What is increasingly popular about these water based Polyurethanes, is that not only do they look great, but they are also non-toxic, low odour and friendly for the environment.

Water based Solvents are particularly quick drying which means it is easier to make sure that no fine dust affects the final finish. While you shouldn’t expect a glossy finish the gentle sheen is very consistent and a great option for an understated but refined look.

The Products We Choose to Work with

The best workmanship in the world can be undone by finishing with an inferior product. When it comes to our timber floor polishing West End product choice, we use only the best.

In our expert opinion POLYCURE & FEAST WATSON offer an outstanding range of solvent based polyurethanes. And when we need a water based polyurethane, we like to work with LOBA DUO & BONA TRAFFIC.

The Option To Stain Your Floors

A final option that you have available to you, is the opportunity to add a stain to your floor. This is exciting as it opens up a trove of possibilities for you. There are so many variables that if you are dealing with the right experts, you can pretty much create whatever wooden floor affect that your creative self has envisioned for your home. Tell us your vision and as experts at staining, we will endeavour to bring it to life.

When calling A Custom Floor for wooden floor sanding in West End, clients will sometimes decide they want to have their timber stained. There all sorts of exciting and creative possibilities available through staining timber.  Even timber that was chosen for being low-cost can be transformed into a work of beauty with cleverly administered floor stain.

The Tint Stain Option

This is a great option for our clients who want their timber floor to appear just slightly darker, or who perhaps just want a slightly different tone to tie in with the feel of their home.

The Direct Stain Option

This option is what we recommend to our clients who want a noticeably darker look, comparable perhaps to walnut or black japan timber floors. The direct stain method takes additional time and a high level of care but if it is darker floors that you want, the timber transformation is very exciting.
